Why an electric shower needs a dedicated circuit sized to the unit, what goes wrong when a more powerful model replaces an old one, and where the isolator belongs.

An electric shower is one of the heaviest single loads in a house and needs its own dedicated circuit sized to the unit’s rating, correctly rated cable, RCD protection, an accessible pull-cord or isolator outside the shower zone, and full testing and certification. It cannot share a circuit and it cannot be plugged in. Fitting a higher rated unit onto existing cable is the single most common and most dangerous shortcut.

Why is an electric shower such a demanding load?

Because it heats water instantly, from cold, on demand. There is no tank quietly warming up over an hour, so all the energy needed to raise the temperature of flowing water has to be delivered in that moment. That makes an electric shower comparable to a cooker in load terms, and unlike a cooker it often runs at full output for the whole time it is on.

This is why the unit’s power rating is the starting point for every other decision. The rating determines the current drawn, which determines the cable size, which determines the protective device, which determines whether your existing board can accommodate it. Those things follow in sequence, and you cannot pick the shower last. What goes wrong when a shower is upgraded?

This is where most electric shower problems begin. A shower fails after fifteen years, the replacement bought is a more powerful model because the old one felt weak, and it gets connected to the cable that is already there. The new unit works. What does the installation itself involve?

Less disruption than people expect in a modern house, more in an older one, and almost all of it depends on the route from the consumer unit to the bathroom.
