Why kitchens carry the highest electrical demand in the house, how socket positions go wrong, and what to settle with your electrician before the units are fitted.

A kitchen refit is the highest electrical load in most homes, and the wiring has to be planned before a single unit is fitted. Ovens and hobs usually need their own dedicated circuits, worktop sockets need positions agreed against the final layout, appliance points have to sit where you can actually reach an isolator, and the whole lot needs testing and certificating. Once the units and tiling are in, changing any of it is destructive.

Why is a kitchen the most demanding room electrically?

Add up what a modern kitchen runs. An electric oven, often a second, an induction or ceramic hob, an extractor, a dishwasher, a washing machine, a tumble dryer, a fridge freezer, a microwave, a kettle, sometimes an instant hot water tap and under-cabinet lighting. Several are high-load appliances that draw heavily for long periods, a very different demand profile from a bedroom with a lamp and a charger.

That is why kitchens are the room where circuit design actually matters. A cooker or an induction hob is normally fed by its own dedicated circuit with a correctly rated protective device and an accessible isolation point, because it is not a load you hang off a general socket ring. Sockets serving the worktop, the appliances and the utility area need a properly designed arrangement rather than an accumulated one. Where the original domestic wiring dates from an era of single ovens and no dishwasher, the existing provision often simply is not there.

Agree these against the final kitchen plan

  • Oven and hob type, because induction and dual ovens usually need dedicated circuits
  • Socket positions along the worktop, measured against the actual unit layout and splashback height
  • Which appliances sit behind fixed units and therefore need an accessible switched isolator
  • Extractor supply, and whether it is recirculating or externally ducted
  • Under-cabinet, plinth and any island lighting, plus where the switching lives

How do socket positions go wrong?

Almost every kitchen electrical regret is a position, not a fault. A double socket that ends up two thirds hidden behind the kettle. An appliance point buried behind an integrated dishwasher with no way to isolate it without pulling the machine out. A socket set at a height that the new splashback now covers. A run of worktop with plenty of sockets at one end and none where you actually prepare food.

These happen because the electrics get set out before the design is final, or from an old plan that changed. The fix is boring and effective: mark socket and switch positions on the wall against the fitted layout, with the appliance list and unit sizes to hand, and walk it before any cable is run. Ten minutes with a pencil prevents the one thing you cannot undo once tiling is on.

Isolation deserves particular attention. Appliances behind fixed units should be switchable from somewhere you can reach, usually a grid switch above the worktop, so a leaking dishwasher can be killed without dragging it out. That is a safety detail as much as a convenience, decided at layout stage.

Does the consumer unit need work as well?

Often, yes. A refit typically adds one or two dedicated circuits, and those need spare ways and appropriate protection at the board. A modern consumer unit with RCBOs and room to expand handles that comfortably. An older board with rewireable fuses, no RCD protection or no spare ways cannot, so it is brought up to standard first. The building regulations approval process treats new kitchen circuits as notifiable work.

This is worth establishing early because it changes the shape of the job. It is also a good moment to look at the wider installation, since the kitchen circuits will sit on the same earthing and bonding arrangement as everything else. Where a property has not been inspected in years, an electrical condition report on the existing wiring while the kitchen is stripped back is far easier than doing it later through finished surfaces.

How does an electrician sequence a kitchen refit?

Kitchen electrics happen in two visits around the fitter, and the order is not flexible.

1Survey and agree the design

Check the board, capacity and protection, then set the circuits against the appliance list and the final kitchen plan.

2Mark out on the wall

Walk the layout with sockets, switches and isolators marked in place, confirming heights against splashback and units.

3First fix on stripped walls

Run new circuits back to the board, chase and install back boxes, and route cable for lighting and appliance points.

4Second fix after units are fitted

Terminate accessories, connect the hob and oven, fit task lighting and commission the extractor.

5Test and certificate

Verify earthing, continuity, insulation resistance, polarity and RCD operation, then issue the installation certificate.

One thing to insist onGive your electrician the actual appliance specifications, not the brochure category. The rating on the oven and hob you have bought determines the circuit, and substituting a bigger appliance after first fix is how kitchens end up needing rework.

A safety point worth stating plainly. Kitchen electrical work is notifiable, and connecting a hob or cooker is not a job for a kitchen fitter or a general builder without electrical qualifications. The appliance connection, the circuit and the certification all belong with a competent electrician, and the Health and Safety Executive is unambiguous about the risk of improvised connections on high-load equipment.

What drives the electrical cost on a kitchen refit?

With kitchens, the deciding factor is how much of the existing provision you can keep. A like-for-like refit in the same layout, with the same appliance types and a board that already has capacity, is contained work. Move the kitchen to a different wall, or swap a gas hob for induction and a single oven for a double, and you are running new dedicated circuits across the room, which is a different scope.

Beyond that, three things move it. The number of circuits and points, because every socket, isolator, light and appliance connection is a termination. The wall construction, because chasing solid masonry and making good is heavier than dropping cable through a stud wall. And whether the board needs bringing up to standard first, which protects the whole property, not just the kitchen.
