Long June days are when solar maths looks its best, and it is also when the doorstep sales pitches peak. Solar battery storage installation is a genuinely good investment for many North West homes in 2026, but the gap between a well-designed system and an overpriced one is wide. This guide covers what the electrical side actually involves, what the grid and certification rules mean for you, and the honest payback numbers, written by people who wire these systems rather than sell them on commission.
What a solar battery storage installation involves electrically
The core components are panels, an inverter, and a battery, but the wiring decisions determine how well they perform. A hybrid inverter handles both solar generation and battery charging in one unit, feeding the consumer unit through a dedicated protected circuit. The battery itself, typically 5 to 13.5 kWh for a family home, mounts in a garage, utility room, or external enclosure with its own isolation and, in many cases, fire-rated separation from escape routes.

Older properties need a health check first. Inverters and batteries depend on sound earthing and a consumer unit with capacity, and a board from the 1990s rarely qualifies. Grid permissions, certification, and the rules that protect you
Any generation connected to the grid needs notification under G98 for systems up to 3.68 kW per phase, or advance approval under G99 above that. Your installer handles the application, but the distinction matters: G99 approval can take weeks, so a 6 kW system promised for installation next Tuesday is a warning sign about the company promising it.
Certification matters for money reasons. Export payments under the Smart Export Guarantee require the installation to be certified by a recognised scheme.
For domestic systems that route is the MCS certification scheme, and zero per cent VAT applies to qualifying solar and battery installations until 2027, including batteries fitted on their own since the 2024 rule change, which knocks a meaningful slice off quoted prices.
The honest payback numbers for 2026
A typical 4 kW panel array with a 5 to 10 kWh battery costs £8,000 to £13,000 installed in the North West this year. A household paying 25 p per kWh and shifting most consumption onto solar and off-peak charging commonly cuts the annual electricity bill by £700 to £1,100, giving payback in the eight-to-twelve-year range. Batteries on time-of-use tariffs improve that by charging cheap overnight power in winter when solar is weak.
The numbers improve again for households with an electric car, because the battery and a smart tariff turn overnight charging into the lowest-cost fuel available in Britain. Orientation and shading still matter more than brochures admit. A south-facing roof at a 30 to 40 degree pitch is the textbook case; east-west splits now perform respectably with modern panel pricing, spreading generation across morning and evening when households actually use it. A chimney shadow crossing the array at 3 pm, though, can cost more output than any panel upgrade can recover.
Choosing an installer without getting burned
Three checks filter out most bad actors. Ask for the MCS number and verify it on the register. Ask who does the electrical work, because some sales-led firms subcontract wiring to whoever is available that week. Ask for the performance estimate in writing using the standard MCS method, not a spreadsheet of best-case assumptions. A firm doing domestic electrical work day in, day out will answer all three without flinching.
Beware of any quote that only stays valid today, any claim that grants cover most of the cost (no such general grant exists in 2026), and any payback figure under five years for an ordinary home. Real systems with honest numbers sell themselves over a cup of tea, not a deadline.

Finally, ask what happens after handover: who registers the system for export payments, who holds the warranty paperwork, and who answers the phone in year three when the inverter shows a fault code. Installation is one week of the relationship; the system runs for 25 years.
What June generation does and does not tell you
A system commissioned this month will produce its best figures almost immediately, and it is worth understanding what those numbers mean. June typically delivers four to five times the daily output of December in the North West, so a summer week proves the equipment works, not that the yearly estimate is right. That distinction matters when comparing quotes signed in midsummer.
The honest way to judge performance is against the MCS estimate month by month, which your installer should provide as part of the handover pack. A system tracking within ten per cent of the monthly figure is doing its job, even when an overcast fortnight makes the app look disappointing. Keep a screenshot of the first full month as a baseline for future comparisons.
Battery behaviour changes with the seasons too. Through summer the battery cycles on solar alone and the grid barely features; from October it earns its keep by charging on cheap overnight rates instead.
