When to Call an Emergency Electrician, and What to Check First

How to tell an active electrical hazard from an inconvenience, what you can safely check at the consumer unit first, and why you should never keep resetting a tripping device.

Call an emergency electrician for burning smells, scorch marks, sparking, a hot socket or switch, exposed conductors, water reaching electrics, or an RCD that trips again the moment you reset it. Those are all live risks. A single tripped breaker that resets cleanly, or a dead area with no other symptoms, is usually diagnosable and can wait for a normal appointment. The distinction is whether something is actively unsafe.

What counts as a genuine electrical emergency?

The honest test is whether there is an active hazard, not whether it is inconvenient. A house with no lights is annoying. A socket that is warm to the touch with a faint smell of hot plastic is a fire developing slowly. Those need very different responses, and most people get the second one wrong because it does not look dramatic.

Anything involving heat, smell or visible damage is urgent. Scorch marks around a socket or switch, brown staining on an accessory, a burning or fishy smell near the board, a socket or plug that is hot rather than warm, sparking, crackling or visible arcing. These point to a loose or deteriorating connection, and a loose connection generates heat, which makes it looser, which generates more heat. It does not stabilise on its own.

Water and electricity together is the other clear category. A leak reaching a light fitting, a ceiling rose, a socket or the consumer unit needs the affected circuit isolated and an electrician out. So does exposed copper, a damaged cable, a cracked accessory with conductors visible, or anything outdoors that has been struck or pulled loose. In all of those cases isolate if you can do so safely and get a qualified electrician to it before anyone uses that circuit again.

What can you safely check before calling?

Quite a lot, and doing so often shortens the visit considerably. Start at the consumer unit. Look at whether one device has tripped or the main switch has gone. If a single breaker or RCBO has tripped, note which one and what it serves, because that tells an electrician immediately which circuit is involved. Try resetting it once. If it resets and stays on, you had a transient event, most likely a failing appliance on that circuit.

If it trips again straight away, stop resetting it. Forcing a device back onto a live fault turns a developing problem into a damaged one. Instead, unplug everything on that circuit, reset once, then reintroduce appliances one at a time. If it holds until one particular item goes in, that appliance is your fault rather than the wiring. That single piece of methodical work solves a large share of call-outs before anyone arrives.

Also worth checking: whether your neighbours have power, since a wider outage is a network issue, and whether a prepayment meter has simply run out. Both are common causes of total power loss that no electrician can fix. Why does repeated tripping matter so much?

Because an RCD tripping is a protective device doing exactly what it was designed to do. It has detected current leaking to earth and disconnected before that current could pass through someone. When it trips instantly on reset, the leakage is still present, which means the condition it protected you from has not gone away.

The common causes are a deteriorating appliance, moisture in an outdoor circuit, damaged cable, or a failing accessory.
